I’ve been playing Abattoir of Zir a few times recently on my Sorcerer and Druid, trying to beat the highest levels possible and level up glyph. So here I want to share my honest feedback on this recent activity.
By the way, since Diablo 4 Abattoir of Zir Dungeon is a temporary seasonal event, things may change significantly later, especially in future seasons. So the developers are telling players that the ever-so-familiar Greater Rifts system will be returning to Diablo 4 as part of an experiment.
Pros
For those who don’t know, Greater Rifts have a dynamically randomly generated dungeon. Your major goal is to kill as many enemies as possible within the time limit and kill the boss. Finally, you’ll get plenty of upgrade opportunities with Diablo 4 Gold, XP, and Legendary Gems.
In Diablo 4, we now have a similar system. But this time, the glyph replaces Legendary Gems. Players can farm Abattoir of Zir for additional loot and glyph empowerment.
This endgame activity will definitely bring some extra challenges to test your builds and go beyond the limitations of the new glyph. Level 100 players like me now have even more reasons to stay in the game. But this event is purely optional.
Cons
To my sadness, Abattoir of Zir Dungeon was not what I originally expected. While I have a lot of respect for what the developers created during the actual season to attract as many players as possible and keep them entertained, it’s still rough and feels rushed. There are several reasons for this.
Lack Of Sense Of Progress
First, once you hit level 100, you can pretty much stop and do something else. Because it doesn’t have Paragon like D3, and there is no character development after that. But that doesn’t mean D4 should also have an infinite Paragon grind.
Paragon system in Diablo 3 is the main reason to keep playing the game, and it provides a certain sense of progression in multiplayer. But in my opinion, this method is not the best, especially for solo players.
So once you hit level 100, all that’s left to do is upgrade your glyphs and find better gear to add more damage.
For this, we also have Nightmare Dungeons and Duriel to run with. You can find Uber Uniques, some cosmetics and high-quality items there.
The good news is that we have more reasons to farm Duriel and prepare for more challenging activities. Where you can test out all your Diablo 4 items and build them in action.
Less Reward
But that’s the second reason this event is mediocre, and that’s the reward.
Abattoir of Zir was not as exciting as I first thought. You’re opened to a randomly generated corridor-map with unbalanced enemies and the final three bosses, one of which can shoot you without knowing what’s actually happening.
But if you manage to kill them all, you won’t gain any sense of accomplishment. Because there are no leaderboards, there is no information about your results.
What’s more, you only get 0 XP because you hit level 100 again. All you get is a powerful glyph that you can upgrade to a higher level to advance to the next repeating tier for the same predictable rewards.
You’ll also receive some loot. But what’s the point when you’re already at your best and have perfect stats and aspects?
In other words, this dungeon makes your character more powerful while making Tier 4 difficult a complete joke.
High Barriers To Entry
The third reason is the barrier to entry. I think even after the recent changes, Tier 1 of Abattoir of Zir is not very popular with new players. It’s basically an enhanced version of Nightmare Dungeons, but with overpowered elites. Here you have no right to make mistakes.
I think Tier 1 should be equal to Nightmare Dungeon level 80. So even lower level players can try this activity and find actual goals for making their characters stronger.
Plus, it gives you more reasons to do this activity to gain XP when you don’t have a level 100 character. These levels will then rise as normal, past Nightmare Dungeon level 100.
High Cost
Beyond that, the cost of opening Abattoir of Zir portal is too high. In my opinion, using all this Sigil Powder to make at least one key is not necessary.
Consider that leveling this new legendary glyph requires hundreds of runs without dying. I guess this experimental activity will be changed and improved in the future.
Final Thoughts
Currently, Abattoir of Zir is just an optional side job for endgame players. They have nothing else to do in Diablo 4, but still want to find some meaningful reason to continue and test the limits of the build.
While this campaign is still unfinished and lacks features, I believe there’s still plenty of room for improvement and that it could be an excellent addition to the game. Have a nice day and stay safe.
