As we all know, Lich King is the ultimate boss in Icecrown Citadel and the final major encounter in WOTLK Classic. Here, I will show you how to beat it as fast as possible. Without further ado, let’s get started!
Phase 1
Lich King is a multi-stage encounter with 15 minute Enrage timers. In the first phase, you will need 2 tanks, 4-6 healers and the rest of DPS.
First, we’re going to bring Arthas near the edge of the platform. Then DPS single target slams the boss and all the mobs for a lot of WOTLK Classic Gold. You can choose to use Bloodlust here, having a tank look for Shambling Horror near the raid.
Lich King will use Necrotic Plague on a random player and Wind Curse on the nearest unit. So let that player run next to Shambling Horror. As long as Shadow Horror stays away from the raid properly, then this Shockwave shouldn’t be too much trouble.
Additionally, Lich King’s buff continues to stack and deal damage every 15 seconds, and when the target dies, a second Shadow Horror spawns. And the first Shadow Horror is still active. When the first Shadow Horror dies from that debuff, it will transfer to the second.
These mobs have Shockwave and Enrage Hunters must use Tranquilizing Shot to dispel. These mobs might allow your team to get the boss stage up to level 70 before seeing the third Shadow Horror.
Once the second Shadow Horror dies and the debuff is transferred to the tank, it reduces the distance your tank is away from the team and permanently removes the debuff. Hence this Drudge Ghouls, any tank can handle them. But when Arthas use Infest Shields, they are killed by Passive Cleave Healers instantly.
At the end of the first stage of the raid, your main tank can use a powerful defense at the end, which is especially useful. Because Necrotic Plague gets a tier of Lich King’s increased damage, tanks will have trouble surviving Heroic dungeons above 20 tiers.

Phase 2
Next, Lich King will cast a Shadow Trap. Make sure you don’t stand in it when you only have 70 health. And Arthas will run to the center of the room, and its AOE will attack you in a super-wide range on the edge of the platform.
They will spawn three Raging Spirits at this stage. As a priority kill target, have your main tank choose the first target and your off tank the next two. These can make the target silence. So keep them out of the raid until the second Raging Spirits spawns. Any remaining Shadow Horror from the first phase dies.
A minute into the second phase, they don’t have more health left. Arthas has destroyed the edge of the platform, so make sure you run in there before they do. Arthas kept the Infest and gained the abilities of Soul Reaper, Defile, and Summon Valkyr.
When a new set of Valkyr spawns, the raid should be offset in the center of the room. That way, they need to cover at the furthest distance and move in the same direction. Best if you can kill all remaining Valkyrs when they’re close to 40 health, and push the boss to 40% health to get to the second phase.
This transition phase is the same as the first phase, but spawns 4 Raging Spirits. You can choose to use Bloodlust here to increase your casting speed to improve your chances of beating Raging Spirits.
Phase 3
You will enter the third stage. There are still 1-2 Raging Spirits alive now. As a priority, you need to get them together to kill.
During this phase, Arthas reserves Soul Reaper and Defile, and gains two new abilities. The first is Vile Spirits, which can create 10 Vile Spirits and attack us. When Vile Spirits spawn, you need to have the entire team move to the opposite side, releasing Frost Trap for Vile Spirits and the boss. Then place your off-tank in front of Vile Spirits to block the chance of their mobs exploding on the impact target.
Lich King will also use Harvest Soul on random players, transferring them into Frostmourne. This stage is a little different, and the team must move together to avoid bombs falling from the sky. You need to reach your team after 40 seconds and kill Vile Spirits along the way.
Lich King’s use of Fury of Frostmourne also marks the end of the battle. After a few minutes of RP, Lich King becomes attackable, killing it again will end the fight.
This concludes this Lich King guide. Hope it helps you to be successful in Icecrown Citadel as soon as possible!
